Faith in the Promiser

30 Sep

There are thousands of believers who look upon the acquisition of faith as a mental struggle, the intense focusing of thoughts on a desired object or promise in order to bring it into being… Others understand faith as being in the words of a promise found in Scripture… This reduces the holy words of Scripture to the level of a magic spell… Faith is not directed at the words of a promise but rests in the One who made the promise.

His Oath, Not Yours

1 Sep

The fact that the Gospel contained in the covenant is based solely on the oath of God separates Christianity from every other religion on earth… The Christian life is not approached with gritted teeth summoning determination and willpower to obey God and show Him our love for Him. The sincere folk who try to do so… see the Christian life based on their oath, instead of resting in the oath of God.

Changing Planes in Midair

4 Aug

Repentance is the sickening realization that we are wrong because we are going in the wrong direction… The Gospel is the announcement that we can change planes in midair!

The First Blessing

22 Jul

There is no other religion on earth that announces the forgiveness of all our sins. It is the complete forgiveness of our sin that is the foundation of everything else that is ours in the covenant…

Our assurance that our sins have been forgiven and we have been accepted by God is the first of covenant blessings and the most important in our experience. Without this, we cannot imagine any of the other blessings. This is the kindergarten of the new covenant, yet for multitudes of church members such a joy has not been even sighted.

It’s All About Him

6 Jul

Complete in Himself, He chose to save us out of sheer love. His covenant is a unilateral covenant originated in the mind of God before time, initiated and achieved by God alone. The only reason behind His desire to make such a covenant, to bring sinful humans into a relationship at infinite cost to Himself, is His unconditional love for us.

Just Say Yes

17 Jun

Never say no to temptation; say yes to Jesus!… When you say no, you are drawing on your willpower, concentrating all the energy of your flesh to refuse the temptation. You are mustering all your human ability to do something to please God. But that isn’t the way the Christian life is lived. That is dead religion at its best!

You’ve Arrived!

23 May

Many believers live in the frustration of trying to arrive at where they already are… In meeting after meeting believers are urged to die with Christ, they go forward to pray and be prayed for instead of realizing that the Spirit placed them in Christ and, therefore, into His death and resurrection when they believed upon Jesus.

True North

10 May

The love of God… is the magnetic north of truth by which we fix our position as we stumble lost in the wilderness of the world… To know that His love for us depends on Him and not on us is the beginning of the way out of our futile, meaningless lives and religious despair.
